The rates at which logging activities are carried out are beyond the renewal rate, resulting in the rapid depletion of rainforests in Indonesia. According to the Center For International Forestry Research, the forests of Indonesia are being logged at a rate of roughly 40 million cubic metres per year, whereas the “sustainable” rate recommended by the Ministry of Forestry is 22 million cubic metres per year.

The short-term economic exploitation through deforestation can be devastating to the long-term economy of developing countries by destroying potential forest products, resulting in lost potential revenue from taxes and duties.
