Non-Government Organizations (NGOs)

You may be surprise, but there are indeed a number of organizations that is willing to go the extra mile to ensure sustainability and conservation in our environment.

“Why go the extra mile when they are not being paid to do so?”

Well, it is because, they are aware of the harm urbanization have brought, and wants to do something about it. They hope to be able to change perceptions of the majority, to create a more sustainable society.
These organizations would usually educate people on environment cognitively. They aim to create awareness of environmental problems, and how the ecological systems connects human actions to the environmental consequences.

Following are some NGOs that strives to conserve biodiversity and energy uses in Singapore:

BirdLife International (Asia)
Bird Life International is a global partnership of conservation organisations that aims to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity.

 

Blue Water Volunteers
Blue Water Volunteers (BWV) is volunteer-base. It conserves specifically the marine biodiversity, and seeks to work with research activities. Additionally, volunteers constantly increase awareness and educate on local marine habitats, such as coral reefs, to public.

 

Conservation International Singapore
Conservation International emphasizes on societies to be responsible and sustainably care for nature and global biodiversity, for the well-being of humanity. It builds upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration.

 

Earth Hour Global
This should be something many of us would be familiar with. Annually, in Singapore, Earth Hour is widely publicised, and there will be an official count down ceremony, as part of global initiative. Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative, where individuals, businesses, governments and communities switch off their lights for one hour to show their concern for the environment.

 

Earth Society
Earth Society is formed by a team of passionate individuals who are driven to educate others on environmental protection, and spreading environmental awareness. They provide schools, companies and organizations with free assembly talks and seminars on global warming.

 

Environmental Challenge Organisation (Singapore)
ECO strives to establish a voluntary environmental movement. They created opportunities  to encourage involvements of young Singaporean, instilling a sense of commitment and awareness of environmental issues and global hazards. With a holistic approach towards environmental issues, ECO hopes that youths will take the initiative to live environmentally sustainable lifestyles, despite the urban cultures they are living in today.

 

Nature Society Singapore (NSS)
NSS is dedicated to the appreciation and conservation of the natural heritage in Singapore. They constantly organise nature appreciation activities and conduct conservation projects and surveys. Furthermore, NSS collaborate with schools and community groups to promote their campaigns towards the protection of natural habitats.

 

Wildlife Conservation Society Singapore (WCS)
WCS manages the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks, and saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. Working with science, global conservation and education they protects and conserves the wildlife biodiversity and wild places in Singapore.

 

World Wildlife Fund Singapore (WWF)
WWF Singapore initiates educational and fundraising activities for Asia Pacific conservation works through close collaboration with corporations and the Singapore community. These funds are used to conserve the wild lives in Singapore, especially the endangered species. It also aids in creating awareness on how deforestation of natural forests have endangered wildlife species.
