In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of the tourism related environmental problems in Bali. However, not much has been done in response to the problems.
Simple things can be done in order to promote more sustainable behaviour.
Firstly, awareness of and education about the current environmental problems is important in encouraging a shift in sustainable behaviour. At an individual level, the reason behind the waste problem is largely ignorance and laziness. Many people do not know the magnitude of the environmental problems that plague the island. As such, they do not feel any pressure to actively engage in sustainable behaviour if it means putting extra effort on their part. For example, raising awareness about the water scarcity problem may lead to more conscientious water usage. Hotels can play a part in this by offering guests reminders to conserve water.
In combatting the littering problem in popular tourist spots in the island, disposing of litter should be made more accessible. By investing in more litter bins, throwing trash away responsibly is made more convenient, and people will be less likely to litter. As more people start to dispose of their litter responsibly, other will follow suit, as people have a tendency to follow social norms.
