Litter Problem
Efforts at the community level are important in fighting the current environmental problems associated with tourism in Bali. At the moment, there are beach clean up programs in place, where people from companies such as Coca Cola, Quicksilves, Garunda Indonesia, and hotel employees gather to clear up the beaches. This program saw 4.5 tonnes of rubbish cleared on responsibly disposed of and recycled in the span on 3 months. Efforts like these are important and make a difference in combatting the pollution problem in Bali, however, it does not solve the real problem – the littering behaviour of responsible parties.
Curbing the litter problem in this situation is more challenging as the community involved does not only comprise of locals, but also the huge number of passing tourists who may do not feel the same connection to the island as the locals do.
