CAT refers to the Citizen Action for Tigers programme. CAT enables members of public to get involved and help conservationists stop poaching in Pahang area of Malaysia. CATWALK is a guided walk/trek through the forest, where volunteers look out for any signs of poaching or other illegal activity and disarm snares and traps. Reports are then made to the local conservation authorities so immediate action can be taken.
Since 2010 CATWALKS have cause hundreds of snares to be destroyed, saving animals from injury or death. Illegal activities that have been reported to local authorities also led to raids and arrests of poachers and others involved in the crime against wildlife.
In order to deter poaching, MYCAT organizes “Cat Walks”, a citizen patrol in danger zones.
Moderate walk- this trek is moderately difficult and last only for a few hours. Volunteers enjoy the outdoor experience, while looking out for signs of illegal activity.
Border walk, moderate/slightly challenging – This trek involves overnight camping in the forest and usually lasts for two or more days. Volunteers trek along the border of Taman Negara.
Cat trailblazer – 4-5 days of hardcore bushwhacking along Taman Negara Border accomplished by park rangers.
CATWALK objectives:
- To contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity in Pahang Malaysia by being present to deter poachers, checking for animal snares and maintaining camera traps
- To raise awareness of the need to conserve the tiger and the Malayan biodiversity by setting up an awareness campaign
- To be aware about the environmental issues in regards to the threat in the region’s biodiversity, environmental ethics and sustainability
