Hanging pancake from Ship of Fools
…the pancake (“mop” in Dutch) hanging on a thread, alludes to the carnival tradition and to the depictions of fools… It is possible that Bosch has also the Jewish tradition in mind: the Jewish “mazzah” found attached to the wall in the synagogue “symbolises the main meal and domestic community of all Jewish inhabitants of the district” [”Psalter of Eleanor of Aquitaine”, ca. 1185, fol. 75r; Cluse, 2000, 354:note 5; Bax, 1979, 189; Encyclopaedia Judaica, 1971, 1155-1158].
