Boat with ten people onboard from Ship of Fools
The ship, moreover, was a favourite leit-motiv of didactic literature from the 14th century on. It was Paul Lafond who in 1914 [Lafond, 1914] first pointed out another possible source of this picture: The Narrenschiff… Among the woodcuts illustrating this edition is one showing a boat laden with six drunken fools. It is far from certain, however, that Bosch’s picture was painted after the publication of Brant’s Narrenschiff. (pp. 36-37)
