Iconology of the Wayfarer Triptych – Detail
The boat is being driven about aimlessly; forgetting duty, the steersman has abandoned his helm to take part in the passengers’ game around the cake. The picture’s basic theme is probably inspired by the last chapter but one of Sebastian Brant’s Ship of Fools… [Brant, 1854, 104; de Tolnay, 1965, 26, Demonts, 1919, 6ff] (p. 26)

“Wir faren umb durch alle landt // All port durchsuchen wir, und gstadt // Wir faren umb mit grossem Schad // Und künnent doch nit treffen wol // Den staden do man lenden sol // Unser umbfaren ist on end // Dann keyner weisz, wo er zu lend // Und hart doch keyn ruw tag, und naht // Uff wiszheyt unser keyner acht. [Brant, 1854, 104]
We travel around through every land // We see through every port and every town // We travel around withe great harm // And cannot reach // The shore where we should land // Our journeying is without end // For no one knows where we should land // And has not one peaceful day, one peaceful night // To wisdom noe of us pay heed [de Tolnay, 1965, 26]”
