Man on his deathbed with a chest from Death and the Miser
The association of the miser with a chest is an old one, and can be found illustrated in a number of late thirteenth and early fourteenth-century manuscripts of La Somme le Roi [Laurent, ca.1290-1300 (Avarice); Millar, 1953]. Bosch must have been well aware of this tradition, for demons aid the miser in his hoarding in the illuminations and in the Washington panel. (p.275)
