Working towards the Singapore Red Cross goal of having one first aider in every household, NTU Red Cross Youth Chapter hosted the 2020 edition of One Life Saved, the branch’s annual first-aid training workshop, on 2 March and 11 May 2021.

Aiming to equip participants with basic first aid skills and to increase awareness of first aid in the NTU community, 24 volunteers from the NTU Red Cross Youth Chapter shared their knowledge with 103 students from various school clubs and orientation camps over the two sessions.

Before the sessions, a roadshow was also held from 10 to 11 February at the NTU South Spine Concourse to reach out to the student population and spread awareness for the sessions.

The workshops’ content, approved by the Singapore Red Cross, was tailored for the types of activities conducted during orientation camps, such as bonding activities and wet games. The participants will be able to utilise the first aid skills learned to conduct their activities in a safe and fun way.

Due to COVID-19-related Dorscon Orange measures at the time, One Life Saved was held in tutorial rooms instead of lecture theatres and students were also split into various groups. By teaching or refreshing the participants’ first aid skills, NTU Red Cross Youth hoped to clear misconceptions about first aid and to increase people’s confidence in these essential skills.

A “Kahoot!” quiz ended off the sessions, with workshop participants winning prizes.

Overall, One Life Saved was positively received, with more than 90% of participants stating their confidence and knowledge in first aid increased in the post-workshop survey.

A first aider’s pivotal role is to identify a casualty and step up to help them. Most think that first aid help refers to treating the casualty directly, but it also includes providing assurance. Through One Life Saved, we hope that more accident witnesses will take initiative to step up and help. Lau De Xing, Coordinator
