Solemn Creatures by Fashion Artifice

Fashion Artifice is a design project that explores the intersection of AI, fashion, and posthumanism. The project borrows from the history and current state of AI in the fashion industry, as well as the theories and principles of trans and posthumanism. This would include looking at how AI is currently being used in fashion and aesthetics such as in the design and production of clothing and accessories and exploring the ethical and philosophical implications of using AI in this way.

The result is Solemn Creatures, a photo and video series that contemplates female identity and beauty with the grotesque charm of posthuman aesthetics and utilises the AI research in Fashion Artifice.

persoN – A Personal Life Story

persoN – A Personal Life Story, is a narrative storytelling of my life story through fashion. Accompanied by a dance choreography, these androgynous pieces move and interact with one another, allowing people to visualize themselves in the pieces and reflecting a version of their past self as the protagonist in their own interpretation of the story.

There is always more than one side to a story.

“Who is your antagonist? Who is your support character? Who do you feel in your life brought or took away something from you?”

One can create their own story through what they see and infer from the fashion pieces. The possibilities are simply endless in this open narrative.

I M OKAY

Second Glance

Amputation is an emotionally traumatic experience that has resulted to as many as 50% of all amputees requiring some sort of psychological intervention. Unable to cope with the loss of a limb, many succumb to psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety. This project is a social cause driven to alleviate the emotional and psychological trauma. I hope to catalyze a change in the public’s and the amputee’s perspective, to help increase self-confidence of the latter and turn a negative connotation to a more positive outlook.

Inspired by body art painting, tattoos, and fashion, the body is a medium or rather, a canvas in which we can use to express ourselves. By offering prosthesis with interchangeable designs, it allows the user to customize their prosthesis with various designs that can act as a physical projection of their personality, interests, cultural identity. This can catalyze as a form of positive reinforcement by giving the choice of ‘dressing up’ your leg according to your mood or even as an extension of your fashion sense. The change of perspective would induce self-love and acceptance. Rather than seeing it as a flaw in the body, why not see it as a feature that can enhance one’s looks, just like an accessory.

“Dear Fashion,”

The fashion industry is expanding rapidly with goods produced at lower prices of lower quality. More styles, lower prices and more waste created. In an attempt to address and create awareness around this issue, “Dear Fashion,” confronts the seismic problem by revisiting relationships with our clothes. An elaborate photo-documentation and data visualisation of 1126 articles of clothings from 7 individuals takes the form of Fashion Obituaries accompanied by a registrar – which catalogues their aesthetics to frequency worn. With a message tagged to each clothing, it serves as a reminder on how we are falling victim to fashion consumerism today.
