Anatomy drawing, Week 4 (2/9)

Anatomy drawing practice 1
Anatomy drawing practice 1

I learnt to draw the anatomy of a model according to an eight and a half format, such that the model’s:

  • head lies within row 1,
  • shoulder-line lies along the middle intersection of row 2,
  • bust apex lies at the baseline of row 2,
  • waist-line and elbow crease lies at the baseline of row 3,
  • hip and wrist lies at the baseline of row 4,
  • bottom ends at the first quadrant of row 5,
  • finger ends at the base of row 5,
  • knee joint lies at the base of row 6,
  • ankle lies at the base of row 8,
  • and toes ends at the the base of row 8 ½

Sketch Idea 1
Sketch Idea 1

Learning and application:

According to the anatomy of a model, I made my first sketch for my initial costume idea.

I made a two sketches, one showing the frontal view, another showing the side-back view.

Depicted in the frontal sketch of my dress, is a transformed version of an armour made out of many modular two-dimensional structures that appears like rectangular scales and a helmet made out of a similar material. Six repeated three-petal structure can be observed, three opening towards the back and three opening towards the front on the armour. An angular folded organza as sleeves for the arms, a tattered skirt resembling a leaf bitten by caterpillars, and a recycled cloth (yellow organza) decorated with tear-drops scales in a diagonal fashion towards the tip of the feet.

Depicted in the side-back view, is the retracted appearance of the dress before transformation where each two-dimensional three-petal flower is shut into a three-dimensional bulbous structure. The flowy organza which is decorated with tear-drops scales is retracted and hidden beneath the layer of skirt made out of rectangular scales.

My inspiration:

My idea is inspired by the thought of conserving our environment and to advocate love for Mother Nature. The base-line of my idea is to create a wearable technology with waste materials through the act of recycling and reusing.

The Plan:

The scaly armour is going to be made of small modular weaves from metal cans that were disposed in my school. The three-petal flowers are to be made out of woven aluminium cans too, except in a different way (I plan to study how to weave circular form with stiff strips of aluminium cans, which I will elaborate later)

I intend to connect all six of the three-petal flowers with wires to the servo motor and infra-red sensor and perhaps an additional servo motor for the organza, so that it becomes retractable and spins upwards to be hidden beneath the armour-skirt.

The tattered skirt that is beneath the armour-skirt would be made of torn cardboard painted with acrylic in the shade of an oil spill. This is an addition to the idea of making a dress that communicates to the public on environmental awareness with regards to improper discard of oil-containing products that may harm the birds in the wild by clogging their feathers together causing their disability to fly and source for food.

Difficulty of execution:

The difficulty in the execution of this idea would be the treatment of waste materials and programming with technology, which in my case deals with a micro servo motor and a motion sensor in the form of an infra-red sensor.

Safety precautions:

In addition, a soft cushion has been planned in advance to shield the waist and neck from risk of meeting sharp edges of the scaly armour.
