Recycling Corner Program

In September 2002, the Recycling Corner Program for schools was launched with the aim of educating and inculcating good 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) habits starting from the grassroots level. Recycling bins for paper, plastic bottles and cans are placed at Recycling Corners within the school premise. To help generate interest and build a sense of ownership of the Recycling Corners among the students, students take charge of the decorating and putting up of interesting displays about the 3Rs at Recycling Corners. In just 4 years of introduction of this initiative, 84% of all schools in Singapore have adopted this program. A related point to note is that education has deeply indoctrinated the 3Rs into our morals and values system – we learn about the 3Rs from young, and we are still constantly hearing about the 3Rs so many years down the road. Education is really a painstakingly slow, long-term process and hopefully will prove to be a useful and powerful tool in changing attitudes and behaviors in the long run.
