Sumatran tigers, also known as Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, are smaller than other species of tigers. A full grown male weigh about 300 pounds (136 kilograms), but can be up to 8.5 feet (2.5 metres) in length, giving them a slender appearance. It was believed that they are smaller in size due to the limited natural habitat for them to reside in and the preys they consume are smaller than what they have access to.

Sumatran tigers have coat of a darker shade or orange, and dirty white colour on the belly. Due to the fact that the Sumatran tigers have natural habitat that is full of high grass, the stripes on them are also closer together and often doubled, than those found on other species of tigers. Thus, these close stripes allow them to blend in with the environment easily.

This species of tiger also has more hair on the face and around the neck area than other species.
