The elderly woman in this picture is one of the many elderly in Singapore that collect recyclables and sell them.  They would collect discarded goods from shops everyday, walking and searching for things to take on  their carts towards collection points.

Thereafter, their haul would be weighed by the collectors and they would receive a penance for their work, according to the weight of their labor.  The collection companies would then load the cardboard items up in their vehicles and transport them to the recycling mills where they would sell them the collected cardboard at a higher price.  These  items would then be recycled at the mills.
