Iconology of the Wayfarer Triptych – Detail
#146
Boat with ten people onboard from Ship of Fools
It illustrates, long before Pascal, the Pascalian theme of man’s pursuit of illusory happiness, seeking it in entertainment which makes him forget the precariousness of his condition and diverts his mind from the contemplation of his end, an idea familiar to Bosch and his contemporaries. It underlies the Praise of Folly by Erasmus [Erasmus, 1913]. The ardor with which men run after happiness is proportionate to their degree of folly. (p. 24)
