This course will explore a broad selection of modern Tamil poems so you can build knowledge of the literary aesthetics, style and techniques employed in Tamil poetry.
This course is designed for English language poets as an introductory course to understand more about Tamil poetry to help enrich their English language poetry.

தமிழ் கவிதையின் தாக்கங்கள், கருப்பொருள்கள், வடிவங்கள், உத்திகள், அணுகுமுறைகள் ஆகியவற்றை இந்த வெபினார் ஆராயும். இந்தப் பாடம் இணையத்தின் மூலம் ஆங்கில வழியில் நடத்தப்படும். இந்த பாடத்திட்டம் ஆங்கில மொழி கவிஞர்கள் தங்கள் ஆங்கில மொழி கவிதைகளை வளப்படுத்த உதவும் வகையில் தமிழ் கவிதைகளைப் பற்றி மேலும் புரிந்துகொள்வதற்காக வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Overview and Learning Outcomes

This webinar will explore Tamil poetry influences, themes, forms, techniques and approaches. This programme will be conducted in English and presented online.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have:

  1. developed their ability, skills & techniques in generating, writing, editing and developing English language poems under the influence of Tamil poetry, forms, techniques, themes, approaches and Tamil culture and language
  2. gained a deeper knowledge of Tamil poetry ‐ its forms, techniques, themes, approaches and influences

  1. பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் தமிழ்க் கவிதை, வடிவங்கள், நுட்பங்கள், கருப்பொருள்கள், அணுகுமுறைகள், தமிழ்க் கலாச்சாரம், தமிழ் மொழி ஆகியவற்றின் செல்வாக்கின் கீழ் ஆங்கிலக் மொழி கவிதைகளை உருவாக்குதல், எழுதுதல், செம்மைப்படுத்துதல், மேம்படுத்துதல் ஆகியவற்றில் தங்கள் திறன்களையும் நுட்பங்களையும் வளர்த்துக்கொள்வார்கள்.
  2. பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் தமிழ் கவிதையின் வடிவங்கள், நுட்பங்கள், கருப்பொருள்கள், அணுகுமுறைகள், தாக்கங்கள் பற்றிய ஆழமான அறிவைப் பெறுவார்கள்.

Who should register?

This course is for writers practising in Tamil or English.

Writers including:

  1. Foundation Writers — Early stage, promising writers with no requirement for any publication history. Foundation writers are those who are writing for the first time or have never written with deadlines or structure before.
  2. Intermediate Writers — Writers who have chosen to pursue writing as a full time or part time career with a serious, professional intent but who are not yet published with a mainstream or recognised independent publisher, or

Participants will be selected by the Visiting Writer with assistance from the Asia Creative Writing Programme. A waiting list will be maintained.

    About Perundevi Srinivasan

    Perundevi has published eight anthologies of poetry and an anthology of microfiction over the past two decades. She is deeply engaged with contemporary Tamil society and culture and a regular contributor of poems, translations and articles to Tamil literary magazines and journals. She has published a volume of essays on sexual violence as a social practice engaging with Tamil literary texts and violence against women. She has also edited a volume of critical essays on the works of the Tamil modernist writer Asokamittiran. An academic by profession, Perundevi has a Ph.D in interdisciplinary human sciences from George Washington University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Siena College. Her research interests include popular religious practices engaging with colonial and post-colonial modernity in southern India, global feminisms, and Tamil literature and cinema.
