Hugging the ghosts of the past and soon-to-be past at NTU ADM Portfolio

Hugging can signify many things. It could indicate affection or grief; it might be congratulatory or encouraging. But one thing in common with all hugs is that it shows support from one person to another.

“Hugging the ghosts of the past and soon-to-be past” is an experiential installation. The audience is invited to journey into a space and physically interact – by hugging or touching – with hanging objects. These objects represent the cultural equivalent of a security blanket, a “comfort” or “transitional” object. They are intentionally made to look like bolsters, a soft pillow object that many Singaporeans grow up with, hugging it to better sleep at night.

These bolsters are arranged and grouped to define a new space, and it relates to the idea of a maze; albeit one without any pre-defined entrances or exits. Furthermore, because the bolsters are removed from their usual context and hung up vertically, it becomes a space that is simultaneously comfortable and engaging yet slightly enigmatic.

'ZHNG' at NTU ADM Portfolio

Makeup has long been perceived to be predominately worn by women. A strong stigma still lingers amongst our society towards men who choose to put on makeup. However, makeup can also be used to enhance one’s features, conceal imperfections and boost one’s confidence. Therefore, recent studies have shown that younger men these days are assimilating to this trend and buying into makeup. However, is Singapore ready for this shift in gender perceptions? This FYP project hopes to broaden mindsets and reduce the taboo surrounding males and makeup by conducting a social experiment on men who are averse to wearing makeup. It hopes to initiate a conversation about the perception of male makeup and to rethink and redefine makeup for men and open new perspectives.

Even though Johnny was steadily recovering, he could only move around the house in a wheelchair. Jennifer, as a protective big sister, took special care of her brother and seldom allowed him to move around unsupervised. Confined and oppressed, Johnny started growing suspicious about the people in the household and the information he had been fed with.

Rhythm of the Woods at NTU ADM Portfolio

Rhythm of the Woods, inspired by Yusuke Oono’s 360° book, celebrates the cyclical balance of Mother Nature through the activities of little forest animals. Lighthearted and simple, the film brings the pages to life through animation. The ripple effect of the actions of the little woodland creatures resonates with Nature. The 360° concept of coming back in a full natural cycle – starting and ending with the same animal – portrays the connection to Nature’s rhythms, and realigning life and daily habits with the cycles of the universe.

Hell's Bride at NTU ADM Portfolio

Hell’s Bride is an experimental stop-motion animation that hopes to hand to you an abstract history behind the little-known Chinese custom called Ghost Wedding or 冥婚 [mínghūn]. With the marriage of paper props, sinister puppets and a beautiful bride, the stage for an uncanny wedding is set.

The overarching question that guided the creation of Hell’s Bride was, “How do I explain my understanding of Chinese ghost weddings to somebody who has no clue about Chinese culture?” At the heart of it all, my project reflects my abstract understanding and relationship with Chinese culture. As a Chinese who lives in a predominantly Chinese society that has been heavily influenced by Western culture and language, it is a first step towards rediscovering traditional Chinese customs and even parts of the language that has been lost to me and others who live in Singapore.
