Meeting 5

25 March 2014
Everyone was present

Aim: Come out with the video draft plan in terms of sequence and presentation

Video 1: Introduction on Chemical Concepts
1. Opening: Video of dissolving solutes in water (such as milo powder), oil in water
2. Definition: someone holding a paper with the definition of solvent and dissolution
3. Another paper with the question ‘So.. Is there a universal solvent’
4. One person defines polar solvent through the use of slides/images/talking – Jiehui
5. Another person defines the non-polar solvents through slides/images/talking – Pratyum
6. Solvation general rule – Jacob
7. Universal solvent
8. Types of interactions in dissolution for polar and non polar through use of images – Shantanu
9. Briefly discuss the different factors that can affect dissolution

Video 2:
1. Show images of different drugs – Jeremy
2. Explain how dissolution is applicable in area of drug discovery
– adsorption and distribution
3. Show images of oil spill – Haikal
4. Explain how oil spill is cleared using solubility concept
5. Explain what is heavy metal pollution and how the metal ions dissolve in water causing toxicity.

Assignment 2

The concerns of acid rain vary across the globe. Many countries in North america and Europe have websites dealing with acid rain. Either search to locate one (“Cabada, acid rain”) or use these links to websites in Canada, the UK, or Europe. What are the issues in the country you selected? Does the acid deposition originate outside the borders of the country?

Long term input of acid rain to lakes causes a decline in calcium levels. This event threatens the entire food web as low pH level possibly correlates with reproduction problems and disappearance of fishes, and indirect effects on the quality and quantity of food for other species.  Acid deposition originated within the borders of Canada and 1.7 million tonnes of SO2 were released into the environment in year 2008. Therefore, it can be concluded that acid deposition occurs within it’s own borders.

Feedback

1. The team feels that the questions are flashed too quickly and we feel we should be given hardcopy of the test papers or time should be adjusted accordingly (e.g more time for the longer questions and longer answers).

2. The curriculum still feels messy and I don’t know what we are supposed to know. Recommend that there should be a detailed course outline of what we are supposed to take away from each unit so that it’s clearer.
