Founded in 2020 and started as a small project in a NTU residential hall to turn food waste into fertilisers for the Hall’s community gardens, The Hungry Worms strives towards zero food waste in Singapore through a hybrid system of earthworms and black soldier flies. These earthworms and black soldier flies convert food waste from commercial and residential sources into organic, sustainable fertilisers for agricultural and urban farming purposes. The team also aims to empower the community to partake in the food waste recycling movement.

Recently, the Singapore government announced the Green Plan 2030 with the goal to produce 30 percent of food locally by 2030. Hence, The Hungry Worms hopes to play a role in food security, closing the cycle of food production through composting.

In May 2021, The Hungry Worms was awarded the SG Eco Fund as part of the first grant call among the 37 awardees.

The Hungry Worms invites all to join the team on this journey to reduce food waste in Singapore and make an impact on the environment together.
