The Freshwater Crab Conservation Roundtable was a 3-day event, held from 27-29 March 2014. Relevant stakeholders and experts invited included those from NParks, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), representatives from governmental agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The objective of the roundtable meeting aimed to discuss and develop a holistic conservation strategy specifically for the Singapore freshwater crab. Many different aspects were covered. It largely covered two areas 1) Background which include an overview of the freshwater crab, research, in-situ and ex-situ conservation programme, 2) Conservation planning which comprises of developing vision, goals, identifying objectives, course of action, implementation and maintenance.
This discussion roundtable was effective in gathering valuable feedback and perspectives, and increased awareness about the conservation of this species. It enabled the respective agencies to come together to take ownership and responsibility in safeguarding the species, protecting its habitats and multiplying its population to prevent extinction. Moreover, it promoted collaboration, communication and relationship-building among relevant organisations. Hence, providing an opportunity to foster a community with a common goal to conserve the species. Such experience can also enhance connections and future co-ordinated conservation efforts among organisations.
