Invasive Species

Many invasive aquatic species are prevalent in the freshwater habitats of Singapore (Yeo, 2010 and Yeo & Chia, 2010). Such invasive species to the freshwater habitat can be potential predators and competitors for food sources.

These species are more commonly sighted in reservoirs, canals and ponds as such habitats are more accessible. Nonetheless, while the high inaccessibility to the hill streams habitats of the Singapore freshwater crab suggests that such incidence will be rare, the common phenomenon of invasive aquatic species in Singapore implies that invasive species can be a potential threat.
