The Nanyang MBA participated in the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run held on 14 Sep 2014. Students and alumni have been highly encouraged to join this event, and we have been a regular participant for the past few years.

The run started at the SAF Open Field near Changi Village and ended at the Changi Prison Complex. There were two categories, namely the 10km Competitive Run and the 6km Fun Run. We proudly participated in the run in our Nanyang MBA t-shirts.

At the finishing point, a carnival was set up and we enjoyed several activities such as performances by inmates, foot massage, photo-taking and there was even a selfie challenge.

The Yellow Ribbon Prison Run aims to create awareness of giving second chance to ex-offenders, to generate acceptance of them into the community and to support their rehabilitation and re-integration into the community. The theme for this year’s run is “The Road to Acceptance”. For more information, visit their website here. You can also read about the news coverage here.

The Nanyang MBA ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, organized by the Nanyang MBA Student Exco, took place on 27 August. The event was very successful with a great turnout of participants as well as generous donations from faculty staff and students.

It was our honour to have Prof Ravi Kumar, Dean of the Nanyang Business School, to grace the event and enthusiastically participate in the challenge.

A video clip of our Ice Bucket Challenge has been uploaded to YouTube here showing the participants in action. We also challenged the MBA classes at SMU, NUS and Insead to complete the challenge.

A grand total of USD 700 was raised and donated to the ALS Association on 9 September. We thank all donors for your generosity in making this event a meaningful one.

What is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

It is an activity involving participants to dump a bucket of ice water on their head or donate to the ALS Association in the United States. It went viral throughout social media and became a pop culture phenomenon in mid-2014. On August 18, 2014, the ALS Association announced that it had received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period (July 29 to August 18) in the prior year. Singapore Delights & Exco Election Party

One of the important events in our first month of the MBA program was the MBA Student Exco Elections. Nominees gave their election speeches during the Meet-The-Voters session on 15 August and the voting was held over the following two weekends.

The results of the election of the Exco and the Club Co-Chairs can be found here.

The first event that the Exco organized was the Singapore Delights & Exco Election Party held on 22 August. The class was invited to the MBA Lounge to have an evening of food and fun.

Since about four-fifths of the class is madeup of non-Singaporeans, local delights including chili crabs, black pepper crabs, fried rice and fried beehoon were served during the party.

After everyone had their stomach filled with the delicious food, we invited our President, Mathew, and our Executive Vice Preseident, Jiajia, to each give us a speech on getting elected, and a general outlook they have for the class.

We look forward to an exciting year ahead with the many events that the MBA Student Exco will bring to the class.
