Solutions/Approaches

solutionsWhile the Singapore government has laid out its plans to build Singapore into an environmentally-friendly city (e.g. building of eco-towns, increasing number of parks, ABC Waters Programme), their efforts are still insufficient in shaping Singapore into a ‘City in a Garden.’ Since environmental problems are a result of human actions, there is a need for the Singapore government to invest in transforming Singaporeans’ attitudes and behaviors towards environmental issues because just providing the facilities and the environment do not equate to its citizens adopting pro-social environmental behaviors and maximizing the use of the                   Photo Credit: Cartoon Press
facilities that have been provided for them.

There are multiple ways that could be adopted to promote pro-social environmental behaviors in Singaporeans. One of the most important way is environmental education. When individuals are educated and understand about the causes and consequences of their actions to the environment, they would be more willing to change their behaviors, especially if they knew that their actions would eventually have an impact on their own life. The Singapore government could also impose laws and regulations or give incentives to encourage Singaporeans to engage in environmentally-friendly behaviors.
