The Earth’s fastest land mammals are rapidly disappearing. Today, there is only an estimated 9000 to 12000 remaining in the wild, with most found in Africa. These numbers are expected to decline further as African farmers continue to shoot or kill cheetahs which prey on their livestock.
Motivated to protect the cheetahs, Cheetah Outreach in South Africa aimed to tackle this human-Cheetah conflict through its Anatolian Shepherd Dog Programme. The programme introduced locals an alternative method to protect their livestock without harming the cheetahs: Farmers were taught to raise Shepherd dogs with their herd so that these dogs would protect their livestock and scare nearby cheetahs away.
Wildlife Warriors collaborates with Cheetah Outreach in the implementation of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog Programme.
