Tragedy of the Commons

ToC is the logic behind the usage of a Common Pool Resource (CPR). ToC elaborates on how each and everyone is self-interested and is gaining benefits by consuming CPR, such as natural resources. These behaviours are rational from individual’s point of view but are in fact, detrimental to the society. Hence, when the population and utilisation of these common resources increase, they will eventually deplete rapidly.

In this case, the CPR is the Asian elephants itself. People in S.E.A who are utilising these elephants for work (logging) and for tourism (trekking and shows) do not see the damage that they are causing to them. Instead, they see how these elephants can benefit them in the form of monetary returns. Therefore, this results in an over exploitation of elephants.

There are 4 solutions in which Hardin proposes that can aid in alleviating the issues of ToC:

  1. Government laws, regulations and incentives
  2. Education
  3. Small-group/community management
  4. Moral-religious and/or Ethical Appeals
